| To produce compact, bushy plants, pinch off the top pair of leaves after seedlings have at least three pairs of leaves. |

| Mulch acid-loving plants with a thick layer of pine needles each fall. The needles will decompose and deposit their acid in the soil. |

| Water infrequently, deeply, and thoroughly. This stops wasteful runoff and encourages deeper root development. Plants with deep roots are healthier and develop greater tolerance to dry spells. |

| Before working in the yard, dig your fingernails into a soft bar of soap. After gardening, your nails will wash clean. |
